4.2-magnitude quake wakes San Francisco Bay Area in California, seismologists say
An early morning 4.2-magnitude earthquake shook the San Francisco Bay Area and the Monterey Bay area in California, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The 4-mile deep quake hit 2 miles from Aromas, about a 45-mile drive south from San Jose, at 2:47 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, according to the USGS.

AROMAS, Calif. (AP) — An earthquake registering magnitude 4.2 shook part of central California early Sunday, the United States Geological Survey reported. The earthquake was detected at 2:47 a.m. local time about 2 miles northwest of Aromas with a depth of 4.59 miles, the science agency said on its website and in a social media post.

Some Californians asleep at around 2:45 a.m. Sunday were rattled awake by a magnitude 4.2 earthquake centered near the Central Coast. The epicenter was about 2 miles northwest of Aromas, an unincoporated community straddling Monterey and San Benito counties that's about 90 miles south of San Francisco.
