A tropical depression is expected to form sometime this week in the western Caribbean Sea, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Meanwhile, Twelve has formed at the western edge of the new tropical wave development area. It is expected to become a major hurricane by weeks end, and move northeast into the Atlantic Ocean. It is not expected to threaten the United States at this time.

The tropics remain active, as a new system forms in the Atlantic and new activity is possible in the northwestern Caribbean.

WPBF 25 Certified First Warning meteorologist Brooke Silverang says it will also strengthen into a hurricane by the mid-week and can even become the third major hurricane of the 2024 season. Models keep this system in the open Atlantic and away from the United States.

Tropical Depression 12 has formed in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, moving slowly to the northwest as of the 5 p.m. Advisory issued by the National Hurricane Center.
